Gladiator Ready!

In this post, we do something a little different! I give you an extended video with the star of Gladiator II and then talk you through how our free tools will help you understand all the tricky bits.

Hello, I’m Mandeep. Welcome to my Watch and Learn English substack. My aim is to teach “real-life” English using videos and topics that are in the news.

What’s on this week?

This email lesson is a hard listen but worth it if you need to practise understanding authentic English.

Let’s get started!

1. Video of the week - An interview with Paul Mescal

Have you seen Gladiator II yet? Set to be one of the big movies of the year, the film takes place around 20 years after the events of the hugely successful Gladiator.

Our video lesson this week is an interview with the film’s star Paul Mescal. He talks about the movie, who he’d like to work with in the future, fashion and how he has fun!

It’s real, authentic English spoken by a native speaker. He speaks with a strong Irish accent that contains lots of cultural references. It’s normally the kind of interview that learners would find REALLY difficult. But I’m here to help you with the hard bits!

Press play on the video. Every time you hear a word that I think is difficult, click on the subtitle that is underlined. I give you a note to explain it all. You can even hear the word alone or get a translation of an example sentence in your language. Let me show you.

Now let’s watch the full video!

Click here to watch the video with clear, correct captions (not auto-generated), definitions for the key vocabulary, and an option to slow the video down to help you catch every word.

What did you think of the interview? Let me know in the comments!
